Ph.D. position at the University of Gottingen (Germany) requires an individual with strong molecular biology

Molluscan shell morphologies have been admired and studied by mathematicians, physicists, and biologists for centuries. However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms that generate a coiled shell remain unknown. The recent discovery of a spectacular and robust open coil "banana" phenotype generated in response to the endocrine disrupter dutasteride presents an ideal opportunity to explore these mechanisms in the model mollusc Lymnaea stagnalis. Using a transcriptomics approach, coupled with in situ visualization of spatial gene expression patterns, the Ph.D. candidate will identify and characterize the major genetic components of the shell-coiling program in L.stagnalis. In addition, although L. stagnalis is a formally recognized OECD bio-sentinel species, its full potential to detect endocrine-active chemicals in the environment is hampered by a lack of knowledge regarding their modes of action molluscs. Therefore, this project will also significantly contribute to the environmental monitoring of European and Holarctic waterways.

This Ph.D. position at the University of Gottingen (Germany) requires an individual with strong molecular biology skills and familiarity with the analysis of large computational datasets such as transcriptomes and whole genomes. Standard molecular lab skills such as RNA/DNA isolation, PCR, cloning, and Sanger sequence analysis and required. A familiarity with bioinformatic analysis (for example the ability to write Perl, Python, R, and shell scripts, to install and use command line programs, and use high-performance computing clusters for analyses) is highly desirable. Familiarity with maintaining (and repairing) semi-automated aquarium systems and working with aquatic animals would be advantageous.

Candidates should hold a Master's in ovulation, cell biology, developmental biology, molecular biology, or a related field. in addition to their academic qualifications, candidates should have excellent communication, record-keeping, and organizational and team-working skills, and be committed to the topic and to working in a dedicated, interdisciplinary research environment. The working language of the group is English, and applicants from abroad are encouraged to apply. For international applicants, a desire to learn German should be demonstrated.

The University of Gottingen is an equal-opportunity employer and places particular emphasis on fostering career opportunities for women. Qualified women are therefore strongly encouraged to apply in fields in which they are underrepresented. The university has committed itself to being a family-friendly institution and supports its employees in balancing work and family life. The mission of the university is to employ a greater number of severely disabled persons. Applications from severely disabled persons with equivalent qualifications will be given preference.

All applications should be made in English and must include the following 3 items (incomplete applications will not be considered):

  1.  A full academic CV including any published or unpublished academic work
  2. A 1-2 page letter outlining your research interest and motivation for applying.
  3. 1-2 letters of reference and contact details of 1-2  referees (ge. previous supervisors)

Applications with the usual documents are to be submitted in electronic form (a single PDF) by 31.08.2023 to the online application platform of the Georg-August University of Gottingen. https//obp.uni-goettingen.de/de-deOBF/index/74168

Two Fully funded graduate student positions at University of Calgary, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM), Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Location: University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM), Calgary, Alberta, Canada. and Lethbridge Research and Development Centre, Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada.

Research Project: Implementation, impacts, and economic aspect of selective dry cow therapy and selective treatment of clinical mastitis in Canadian dairy herds.

Description: Are you a motivated and passionate person seeking an exciting research opportunity in the field of veterinary science and dairy herd management? We are currently looking for two talented and dedicated individuals to join our dynamic research team for a ground-breaking project on the adoption of selective antimicrobial therapy practices in dairy herds in Canada.

Antimicrobial resistance is a big threat to the health of people and animals around the world. Since antimicrobial use is a big reason why antimicrobial resistance keeps getting worse, it makes sense to look into ways to cut down on unneeded use. Most antimicrobials used on dairy farms are used to treat and prevent mastitis, which is the inflammation of the mammary gland. Treatments are most often used when the cows are drying off and when they are demonstrating clinical signs of mastitis. Selective treatment practices such as selective dry cow therapy and selective treatment of clinical mastitis should be looked into as ways to cut down on the use of antimicrobials on farms. This research project will help Canadian dairy farmers reduce antimicrobial use by facilitating the adoption of selective antimicrobial therapies.

These are full-time, on-site positions with a primary placement in Calgary, Alberta, and a temporary placement in Lethbridge, Alberta. Research opportunity entitled: "The role of rh11/rh37/rh52 DEAD-box Helicases in microRNA biogenesis".

In the PRELUDIUM BIS 2022/47/O/NZ1/00390 entitled: "The role of rh11/rh37/rh52 DEAD-box Helicases in microRNA biogenesis".

prof. dr. hab. Artur Jarmolowski is looking for an associate for the position of Ph.D. student. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to take part in an interesting project aimed at understanding the role of DEAD-box helicases in microRNA biogenesis. The research will be conducted in a successful team in a very nice scientific atmosphere at the Faculty of Biology of Adma Mickiewicz University in Poznari.

About the project: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of small non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression in eukaryotes. MiRNAs are key regulators of plant development, as well as a very important element of plant response to biotic and abiotic stresses. In plants, complete blockage of miRNA biogenesis is lethal. A significant disruption of miRNA biogenesis lead to strong pleiotropic defects. Primary miRNA precursors (pri-miRNAs) contain a hairpin loop structure in which the miRNA sequence is embedded. In the first step of the biogenesis of these molecules, hairpin structures are excised from the pri-miRNAs, creating shorter precursors called pre-RNAs. In the second step, 21 nucleotide double-stranded RNA containing miRNA and miRNA* sequences are excised from the pre-miRNA. Then, these duplexes are unwound and short miRNA molecules are incorporated into the silencing complex (RISC), where they perform their function as negative regulators of gene expression by binding to the target mRNA, which leads to its degradation. In this project, we will investigate the role of three proteins: Dead-box helicases from the DDX#/DED1 subfamily in the remodeling of the hairpin loop structure and its impact on the efficiency of miRNA formation. for this purpose, advanced techniques of molecular biology, cell biology, and biotechnology will be used, such as the construction of transgenic lines, genome editing using the CRISP-CAS9 method, next-generation sequencing, co-immunoprecipitation of proteins combined with their identification using mass spectrometry, confocal microscopy (protein-protein interactions using the FRAT-Flim method).

Requirements:

Essential: master's degree: in biology, biotechnology, bioinformatics, and a similar, good understanding of molecular biology techniques, scientific curiosity, high motivation, enthusiasm and independence, fluency in English, ability to work in a team

Desirable: Practical experience in molecular biology

Additional skills and an advantage - experience in working with plants, basics of programming in the R language.

We offer:

scholarship for 48 months (PLN 5,000/gros per month (until the month in which the mid-term evaluation of the doctoral student will be carried out at the doctoral school), PLN 6,000/gross per month (after the month in which the mid-term evaluation of the doctoral student will be carried out at the doctoral school)
