Research Project: Implementation, impacts, and economic aspect of selective dry cow therapy and selective treatment of clinical mastitis in Canadian dairy herds.
Description: Are you a motivated and passionate person seeking an exciting research opportunity in the field of veterinary science and dairy herd management? We are currently looking for two talented and dedicated individuals to join our dynamic research team for a ground-breaking project on the adoption of selective antimicrobial therapy practices in dairy herds in Canada.
Antimicrobial resistance is a big threat to the health of people and animals around the world. Since antimicrobial use is a big reason why antimicrobial resistance keeps getting worse, it makes sense to look into ways to cut down on unneeded use. Most antimicrobials used on dairy farms are used to treat and prevent mastitis, which is the inflammation of the mammary gland. Treatments are most often used when the cows are drying off and when they are demonstrating clinical signs of mastitis. Selective treatment practices such as selective dry cow therapy and selective treatment of clinical mastitis should be looked into as ways to cut down on the use of antimicrobials on farms. This research project will help Canadian dairy farmers reduce antimicrobial use by facilitating the adoption of selective antimicrobial therapies.
These are full-time, on-site positions with a primary placement in Calgary, Alberta, and a temporary placement in Lethbridge, Alberta. Salary will be commensurate with experience and align with the UCVM Veterinary Medical Sciences Graduate Program funding policy. for outstanding students, internal top-up award opportunities are available on a competitive basis. Starting in January or May 2024 is desirable.

Qualifications: Applicants will possess an undergraduate degree in animal science, animal, animal biology, or other agricultural-related degree with an interest in epidemiology, dairy cattle production, and infectious disease. A DVM (or equivalent) background is an asset. Applicants need to demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills and must be able to drive and qualify for a valid driver's license in Alberta.
