Fully funded Graduate opportunity at the department of Poultry Science, Auburn University

 

The Department of Poultry Science at Auburn University is seeking highly motivated graduate students with a passion for poultry reproduction. The Hanlon lab focuses on the integration of reproductive physiology, endocrinology, metabolism, growth, neurophysiology, and management using molecular, biochemical, and physiological approaches to support the reproductive success of poultry. successful candidates will lead and assist with projects from an applied and fundamental science perspective. We are currently seeking for the following specific project areas:

Graduate Students Project: 

1. The impact of social dynamics and rooster behavior on broiler breeder mating success.

2. Synchronization of photoperiod with body weight and metabolic thresholds to optimize sexual maturation in cage-free layers. 

3. The impact of photoperiod, spectrum, and intensity during incubation. 

4. The anticipated start date for these projects is January or May 2024. All projects are two-to-three-year positions and include a graduate research assistance (GRA) stipend. 

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to work both collaboratively and independently to conduct animal studies and laboratory analyses. Results from these studies will be disseminated via published researched articles and conference presentations by successful candidates.

Qualifications 

1. A BSc in poultry science, animal science, veterinary science, molecular biology, or a related field by the time of hiring. 

2. Basic knowledge of research methods, including data collection and analysis 

3. Effective written and verbal communication skills. 

4. Previous experience with livestock, especially poultry, and knowledge of physiology, reproduction, endocrinology, and/or metabolism will be considered an asset.
