Fully funded graduate assitantship for M.S student at the Department of Ecology at Montana State University.

I am recruiting 1-2 M.S. students to join my lab in the Department of Ecology at Montana State University in January 2024. While specific projects will depend on individual interests and career goals, students can expect to participate in research on the conservation and population genomics of birds in Western North America and / or the tropical Pacific.

Research aims include describing genomic variation across species ranges, identifying patterns of dispersal in complex landscapes, and inferring how populations have responded to habitat loss, invasive species, and historical climate change. Students will be supported by Graduate Research Assistantships (GRAs), which provide a stipend of $2,200 per month for two years, a tuition waiver for up to 6 credits each semester, and health insurance. Helpful qualifications include an academic background in ecology and evolution, strong writing and quantitative skills, and field experience with birds or other animals. I also value curiosity, perseverance, logistical abilities, and attention to detail. However, graduate school is a training opportunity, and I encourage motivated candidates to apply regardless of their specific preparation.

I am a new faculty member and first-year professor broadly interested in the forces that shape genetic variation in birds, and their implications for conservation. Work in my lab https://elinck.org/ touches on many subfields of evolutionary biology and ecology, and members will develop skills in the field of ornithology, bioinformatics, statistics, programming, and scientific writing. I aim to cultivate a lab culture and scientific practice that is equitable and welcoming of diversity in all its dimensions, including class, gender identity and sexual orientation, race and ethnicity, and life experience. Montana is home to 12 Tribal Nations, and I am particularly committed to providing opportunities to Indigenous students. Montana State University is located in the vibrant small city of Bozeman, on the northern edge of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Bozeman is known for its beautiful natural setting and access to outdoor recreation, its live music, and a food and drink scene that punches above its weight.

To apply, email a short cover letter, a CV, and contact information for three references to me at ethanblinck@gmail.com. Your cover letter should include your motivations for pursuing a graduate degree, a description of your academic/professional background, and some discussion of the scientific questions that excite you. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have questions about the position, application process, or life in Montana. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, with a final deadline of 1 October 2023. I'll reach out to all candidates with decisions later that week.

Extension to PhD

Depending on performance, funding can be sought to extend to a full 4- year PhD

Key technology

Hyperspectral imaging using coherent Raman spectroscopy (CRS) is an advanced imaging technique that combines the principles of Raman spectroscopy and imaging. It allows for label-free, non-destructive, and high-resolution imaging of biological samples where the image can be tuned to visualise different chemicals in the tissue post-recording. In CRS-based hyperspectral imaging, two laser beams with different frequencies are used to excite molecular vibrations in the sample. The interaction be tween the laser light and the sample generates coherent Raman scattering signals, which provide molecular-specific information about the sample, allowing researchers to visualize and analyse its chemical composition and spatial distribution.

 Why is this technology important?

Hyperspectral imaging using CRS enables the visualization and characterization of specific molecules and their distributions within tissues or cells. It has the potential to revolutionise our insights into various biological processes, such as cell metabolism, tissue morphology, and disease progression. Hyperspectral imaging can differentiate between healthy and diseased tissues and can assist in detailed tissue analysis and pathology by providing information on cellular structures, chemical composition, and molecular changes associated with diseases. In surgical procedures, hyperspectral imaging can serve as a real-time imaging tool to guide surgeons by identifying tumour margins, distinguishing between healthy and diseased tissues, and optimizing the extent of tissue resection. Hyperspectral imaging using CRS can be valuable in drug discovery and development processes enabling researchers to study drug-target interactions, monitor drug delivery and distribution, and assess therapeutic efficacy at a molecular level.

General Research Theme of the Research Masters Project

The student will work on an exciting project involving a recently built laser system that performs hyperspectral imaging of tissue samples with unprecedented spectral resolution and fast capture rate. The student will be required to work closely with other team members responsible for building/maintaining/and using this system. The student will also become proficient in using and maintaining this system and will be required to learn about aspects of nonlinear optics and optical engineering including the use of opto-electronic instrumentation. The student will also be required to work closely with members of the biology department who will prepare and mount samples for imaging, and may be required to engage with the preparation of the samples. The student will need also need to communicate effectively with the biology staff as we seek to interpret the hyperspectral images that are captured. The main work of the masters student will be in the area of data capture and processing. The raw data will be heavily processed in order to produce images that are visually interpretable to the biologist. This process will require the student to become proficient in programming in python to work on aspects of machine learning as well statistical modelling. Overall the student will be exposed to aspects of biology, statistics, programming, machine learning, photonics and optical engineering.

Four-year Ph.D. position in Vascular Biology. Candidate with biomedical or biochemical disciplines are entreated to apply

Where: Centro de Biologia Molecular Severo Ochoa, Madrid, Spain

What we offer:

Incorporation to an emerging group in the field of vascular biology and inflammation via a four-year contract 9FPI programme) associated with our funded project "Unmasking novel roles for endothelial autophagy processes during inflammation" (PID2022-1375520A-100).

Personalized mentorship and opportunity to learn directly from the Principal investigator by side-to-side benchwork.

Associated funding for a 3-month stay abroad.

Research: Our lab is interested in characterizing the crosstalk between immune cells and the vascular system during physiological and pathological inflammation. Recently we have discovered that endothelial cell autophagy, a metabolic and homeostatic process, regulates the acute inflammatory response (Regiero-real et al, immunity 2021). in this project, we will explore the molecular mechanisms that regulate this phenomenon with the aim of identifying new therapeutic targets to modulate inflammatory disease. To address our research questions, we use a variety of in vitro and in vivo techniques, including cutting-edge high-resolution microscopy, quantitative proteomics, and murine models of inflammation.

Profile: candidate should hold an MSc in biomedical or biochemical disciplines. Experience in in vivo mouse models, cell culture, immunology, bioinformatics and molecular biology will be very positively evaluated. good communication skills in writing and oral English.

To Apply: please email your CV, academic records, and 1-2 reference letters from previous supervisors to Natalia Regiero Real (ngeglero@cbm.csic.es) by September 20th, 2023
