2 Ph.D. Positions in the group of biocatalytic Synthesis at University of Graz, Austria focus on Molecular and structural biology are eligible to apply



A Ph.D. position (focus on Molecular and structural biology) is available at the Institute of Chemistry at the University of Graz, Austria in the Group of Biocatalytic Synthesis under the supervision of Dr. Christoph Winkler, together with Ass. Prof. Dr. Pedro Alejandro Sanchez Murcia from the Computer-Aided Molecular Design Lab at the Medical University of Graz. The objective is the development of an efficient enzymatic synthesis of challenging macrocycles. Two Ph.D. students will work together on the topic, each focusing on a different aspect. The position is for 3 years and ideally starts by January 2024.

  • An exciting project in a diverse and collaborative environment in two different internationally established working groups: the Group of Biocatalytic Synthesis (The lab of Prof. Wolfgang Kroutil, University of Graz) and the Computer-Aided Molecular Design Lab (the lab of ass. Prof. Dr. Pedro Alejendro Sanchez Murcia, Medical University of Graz)
  • You will be trained in innovative techniques ranging from biocatalysis and organic synthesis to molecular biology, with a focus on computational chemistry methods and bioinformatics. 
  • You will gain  experience in applying modern high-throughput methodologies and enzymes engineering 

Your Profile 

  • Master's degree or equivalent qualification in organic chemistry, biochemistry, or a related discipline 
  • Eligible as a graduate student at the University of Graz (Austria)
  • Experience and sound knowledge in molecular biology, biotransformations, and bioinformatics
  • Any additional experience in one or more of the following topics is beneficial: organic synthesis and analytics (HPLC, GC, NMR) or computational chemistry (MD and/or QM/MM MD simulations) 
  • Excellent spoken and written English 
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of an international research team 

Your Task 

  • Sequence-based enzyme identification and establishment of sequence similarity networks 
  • cloning, expression, and characterization of new biocatalysts 
  • Computational modeling of enzymes-substrate interactions and enzymatic reaction mechanisms
